MY TEN WORDS
- A chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements that can be separated into simpler substances by chemical reactions.Chemical compounds have a unique and defined chemical structure; they consist of a fixed ratio of atoms that are held together in a defined spatial arrangement by chemical bonds. Chemical compounds can be molecular compounds held together by covalent bonds, salts held together by ionic bonds, intermetallic compounds held together by metallic bonds, or complexes held together by coordinate covalent bonds. Pure chemical elements are not considered chemical compounds, even if they consist of molecules which contain only multiple atoms of a single element (such as H2, S8, etc.)
- TOXICITY is the quality, relative degree, or specific degree of being toxic or poisonous: to determine the toxicity of arsenic.
- Environmentalists are
an expert on environmental problems.
any person who advocates or works to protect the air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources from pollution or its effects.
a person who believes that differences between individuals or groups, esp. in moral and intellectual attributes, are predominantly determined by environmental factors, as surroundings, upbringing, or experience ( opposed to hereditarian).
- Pollution
the act of polluting or the state of being polluted.
the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment: air pollution.
Pollution
- Dissolve
to become dissolved, as in a solvent.
to become melted or liquefied.
to disintegrate, break up, or disperse.
to make a solution of, as by mixing with a liquid; pass into solution: to dissolve salt in water.
to melt; liquefy: to dissolve sugar into syrup.
to undo (a tie or bond); break up (a connection, union, etc.).
- Ecology the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including
other organisms.
- Spill
to cause or allow to run or fall from a container, esp. accidentally or wastefully: to spill a bag of marbles; to spill milk.
of a liquid, loose particles, etc.) to run or escape from a container, esp. by accident or in careless handling.
8. Concentration chemistry The concentration of a chemical solution refers to the amount of solute that is dissolved in a solvent. We normally think of a solute as a solid that is added to a solvent (e.g., adding table salt to water), but the solute could just as easily exist in another phase. For example, if we add a small amount of ethanol to water, then the ethanol is the solute and the water is the solvent. If we add a smaller amount of water to a larger amount of ethanol, then the water could be the solute!
- COREXT Corexit is a product line of solvents primarily used as a dispersant for breaking up oil slicks. It is produced by Nalco Holding Company which is associated with BP and Exxon. Corexit is the most-used dispersant in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, with COREXIT 9527 having been replaced by COREXIT 9500 after the former was deemed too toxic.Oil that would normally rise to the surface of the water is broken up by the dispersant into small globules that can then remain suspended in the water
10. Prevent to keep from occurring; avert; hinder: to hinder or stop from doing something.
